Production Cloud Architecture Overview

Deploying modern full-stack web applications to production demands a balance between developer velocity, cost efficiency, ironclad security, and operational reliability. While serverless platforms provide frictionless initial setups, growing applications rapidly encounter vendor lock-in, unpredictable monthly compute invoices, cold start latencies, and restrictive database connection constraints.

This case study details a battle-tested, production-grade cloud deployment architecture built on containerized micro-services orchestrated with Docker Compose on dedicated Cloud VPS / AWS EC2 instances. The system hosts a Next.js 15 SSR frontend, a high-concurrency FastAPI asynchronous backend, a persistent PostgreSQL 16 relational database, and a Redis in-memory cache—shielded behind a hardened Nginx reverse proxy with automated Let’s Encrypt TLS renewal and managed by a zero-downtime GitHub Actions CI/CD deployment pipeline.

Architectural Highlights

  • Dual-Tier Network Isolation: Only Nginx exposes ports 80 and 443 to the public internet. All upstream services—Next.js, FastAPI, PostgreSQL, and Redis—reside within an isolated internal Docker bridge network (app-network), eliminating direct exposure of database and cache ports to external attack vectors.
  • Next.js Standalone Optimization: Multi-stage Docker builds isolate static assets and output a minimal standalone Node.js server bundle, slashing image size from 1.4GB down to 68MB and achieving sub-30ms internal render cycles.
  • FastAPI Asynchronous Concurrency: Powered by Uvicorn async workers, Pydantic v2 serialization, and asynchronous connection pooling via SQLAlchemy 2.0, effortlessly servicing thousands of concurrent WebSocket and REST interactions per second.
  • Automated Zero-Downtime Rollouts: GitHub Actions builds versioned container images on push to main, runs Trivy vulnerability scanning, pushes immutable layers to GitHub Container Registry (GHCR), and triggers an atomic rolling update on the host with healthcheck validation and automatic rollback.
  • Persistent Data & Automated S3 Snapshots: PostgreSQL data volumes are mounted to host-isolated persistent paths, augmented by an automated encrypted cron job generating daily compressed dumps pushed to offsite AWS S3 storage with a 30-day lifecycle retention policy.

1. System Topology & Network Architecture

The deployment topology separates responsibilities into four distinct operational layers:

A. Edge & DNS Layer

Traffic enters through Cloudflare’s global Anycast edge network, which handles DNS resolution, Layer 3/4/7 DDoS mitigation, Web Application Firewall (WAF) rule evaluation, and static edge caching. Strict SSL/TLS encryption ensures end-to-end cryptographic integrity between Cloudflare and the origin host.

B. Host Gateway Layer (Nginx)

The host server runs a dedicated Nginx reverse proxy compiled with HTTP/2 and TLS 1.3 cipher suites. Nginx performs:

  1. HTTP to HTTPS 301 Redirection: Forcing all incoming port 80 traffic to secure port 443.
  2. Automated SSL Lifecycle: Certbot webroot ACME challenges renew Let’s Encrypt wildcard certificates automatically every 60 days without container restarts.
  3. Traffic Routing:
    • location / proxies incoming client requests to http://web:3000.
    • location /api/ strips the prefix and proxies backend requests to http://api:8000.
    • location /ws/ elevates HTTP connections to full-duplex WebSockets with indefinite timeouts.
  4. Rate Limiting & Security Headers: Leaky bucket rate limiting (limit_req_zone) restricts brute-force abuse on auth routes to 5 requests per second, while injecting HSTS, X-Content-Type-Options, and Content-Security-Policy headers into every response.

C. Containerized Compute Layer

Next.js and FastAPI run as unprivileged non-root users (nextjs:nodejs and appuser:appgroup) in immutable Alpine/Slim containers. Each container implements native Docker HEALTHCHECK instructions that poll local /health endpoints. Docker Compose monitors these healthchecks to ensure dependent services only start when prerequisite dependencies report healthy status.

D. Persistent Storage & In-Memory Cache

  • PostgreSQL 16: Configured with optimized shared_buffers = 256MB, work_mem = 16MB, and effective_cache_size = 768MB. Database files reside on a dedicated Docker named volume (postgres_data) mapped to the host filesystem, guaranteeing persistence across container teardowns and system reboots.
  • Redis 7.2: Serves as the high-throughput caching tier and distributed rate-limiting state store. Enabled Append-Only File (appendonly yes) logging guarantees write durability without sacrificing sub-millisecond retrieval speeds.

2. Docker Compose Production Orchestration

The entire multi-container topology is declared in a unified docker-compose.prod.yml configuration:

3. Automated Zero-Downtime CI/CD Pipeline

To ensure deployments never interrupt active client requests, the deployment pipeline couples GitHub Actions with an atomic container rolling replacement strategy on the host:

The Deployment Execution Script

On the production host, zero downtime is achieved by selectively restarting updated services without restarting the shared network, database, or reverse proxy:

#!/usr/bin/env bash
set -euo pipefail

export IMAGE_TAG="$1"
cd /opt/production/deployment

echo "==> Pulling target image versions (tag: ${IMAGE_TAG})..."
docker compose -f docker-compose.prod.yml pull web api

echo "==> Performing zero-downtime rolling update for backend API..."
docker compose -f docker-compose.prod.yml up -d --no-deps api

# Poll healthcheck endpoint until verified healthy
echo "==> Verifying backend health..."
for i in {1..30}; do
  if docker inspect --format='{{json .State.Health.Status}}' prod_api | grep -q '"healthy"'; then
    echo "✓ Backend API verified healthy!"
    break
  fi
  sleep 2
done

echo "==> Performing zero-downtime rolling update for frontend Web..."
docker compose -f docker-compose.prod.yml up -d --no-deps web

echo "==> Verifying frontend health..."
for i in {1..30}; do
  if docker inspect --format='{{json .State.Health.Status}}' prod_web | grep -q '"healthy"'; then
    echo "✓ Frontend Web verified healthy!"
    break
  fi
  sleep 2
done

echo "==> Cleaning stale dangling image layers..."
docker image prune -f

echo "✓ Deployment complete with ZERO user downtime."

4. Database Persistence & Offsite Backup Automation

A containerized database is only as reliable as its backup strategy. While local Docker volumes protect against container recreations, hardware failures or accidental data corruption necessitate automated, offsite snapshot archiving.

Automated Backup Script

Every midnight, a standalone cron runner executes an isolated backup script:

#!/usr/bin/env bash
set -euo pipefail

TIMESTAMP=$(date +"%Y%m%d_%H%M%S")
BACKUP_DIR="/var/backups/postgres"
FILENAME="db_backup_${TIMESTAMP}.sql.gz"
S3_BUCKET="s3://production-db-backups/postgres"

mkdir -p "${BACKUP_DIR}"

echo "[${TIMESTAMP}] Starting PostgreSQL streaming dump..."
docker exec -t prod_db pg_dump -U "${POSTGRES_USER}" "${POSTGRES_DB}" \
  | gzip -9 > "${BACKUP_DIR}/${FILENAME}"

echo "[${TIMESTAMP}] Encrypting and uploading to AWS S3 / Cloudflare R2..."
aws s3 cp "${BACKUP_DIR}/${FILENAME}" "${S3_BUCKET}/${FILENAME}" \
  --sse aws:kms \
  --storage-class STANDARD_IA

echo "[${TIMESTAMP}] Pruning local backups older than 7 days..."
find "${BACKUP_DIR}" -type f -name "*.sql.gz" -mtime +7 -delete

echo "[${TIMESTAMP}] Database backup completed successfully: ${FILENAME}"
